Ed Reeves

Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Educational Research and Leadership

Edward B. Reeves (Ph. D., University of Kentucky) is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Educational Research and Leadership (CERL), a unit within The Institute for Regional Analysis and Public Policy that is devoted to research on educational policy and practice. Reeves also serves as editor of the CERL Occasional Research Paper Series, a nonproprietary publication for disseminating educational research that is regional, state-level, or national in scope. The author of The Hidden Government (1990, University of Utah Press) and editor of Human Systems Ecology (1989, Westview Press), Reeves is currently pursuing research on: Kentucky public school performance and improvement, human capital development in relation to employment in the 13-state Appalachian region, and national patterns of rural versus metropolitan postsecondary educational attainment. A newly conceived project will investigate the effects of family resources, peer groups, and high school quality on mathematics achievement among the 2002 national cohort of 10th grade students.

Professor Reeves’ work has appeared in American Sociological Review, American Ethnologist, Rural Sociology, The Sociological Quarterly, Journal of Research in Rural Education, Research in the Schools, Proceedings and Papers of the Applied Geography Conference, The Journal of Poverty, and other scholarly outlets. Reeves previously served as Chair of the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminology, where he has also been a faculty member since 1984.
